Ghana has a new face at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), and he’s making history.

Adigao Alvin Wenia, an undergraduate student at the University of Ghana and a passionate climate advocate, is Ghana’s youngest climate negotiator, joining global leaders in shaping climate policies that impact millions across Africa.

Known as the Gen Z Climate Leader, Adigao Alvin Wenia’s journey to the international stage began years ago with grassroots environmental initiatives focused on climate literacy and youth inclusion. From mobilizing young people for climate action in his community to engaging global leaders in policy dialogues, Alvin has remained steadfast in his mission to drive meaningful change.

At COP29, Alvin followed negotiations on Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), ensuring that Africa’s priorities were reflected in global climate commitments, particularly pushing for greater youth participation in climate policy.

"I believe in a future for young people, by young people, and with young people," Alvin says.

Beyond negotiations, Alvin has led impactful and innovative climate solutions within his community. Utilizing digital platforms, the arts, and policy dialogues, he has effectively mobilized young people to take action. His track record of impact-driven initiatives has empowered over 3,500 young people, creating a ripple effect in their communities.

Alvin is also the founder of The Child with Big Dreams, an initiative dedicated to empowering children, promoting education, and inspiring real positive change. This initiative is built on the fundamental belief that young people play a critical role in shaping the future. In providing the necessary tools and resources through innovative, out-of-the-box programs and projects, Alvin is equipping the next generation to lead sustainable transformations in their communities.

Alvin acknowledges the African Youth Negotiators Fellowship, organized by Green Africa Youth Organization in partnership with UNICEF Ghana, Environmental Protection Agency Ghana, and Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) Ghana, as a vital platform that supported his journey at COP29.

As he engaged in negotiations, side events, and youth-led discussions at COP29, Alvin represented the urgency and determination of a new generation of climate leaders. His advocacy goes beyond words—it is backed by action, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to securing a just and sustainable future for all.

Looking ahead, Alvin is committed to amplifying youth voices in global climate governance, ensuring that young people are not just participants but key decision-makers. He aims to expand The Child with Big Dreams initiative, reaching more young people with educational programs and capacity-building workshops on climate action. He also plans to foster stronger partnerships with international organizations to scale up climate solutions tailored to Africa’s unique needs.

Through continued advocacy, innovative projects, and mentorship programs, Alvin envisions a future where young people lead the charge in building climate-resilient communities.

His journey is just beginning, and his impact will only continue to grow.
